From walking across Afghanistan to becoming a Deputy Governor of Iraq, advising Hillary Clinton to tutoring Prince William, the breakout political star of 2019 has led an extraordinary life to date.

He is a Conservative MP who was once a member of the Labour Party; a seasoned diplomat who reached the highest echelons of the diplomatic services before leaving to undertake a solo walk for two years across Afghanistan, Iran, India and Nepal. His life is steeped in adventure, principle and public service. Is it any wonder that former International Development Secretary Rory Stewart was recognised as the brightest and most exciting figure in British politics during this year’s Conservative Party leadership elections, capable of reaching across the Brexit and party political divide to appeal to voters of all ages and opinions?

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Malaysia, commissioned in the Black Watch when only a teenager, a bestselling author and Professor at Harvard, Rory Stewart’s career bears little resemblance to the typical 21st century politician. In this conversation with Hannah MacInnes, we’ll explore the lessons he’s learned from his life so far.
